Bangladesh Tourism Board (BTB), under the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, was established in 2010 as a statutory body under Bangladesh Tourism Board Act-2010 for overall development, administration and growth of tourism industry and services. BTB, as a National Tourism Organization (NTO), is committed to achieve its vision as to make Bangladesh as one of the tourist destination countries in South Asia. BTB is working with the two mission statements to reach this vision. Firstly, development of world class tourism products and services through well-planned and sustainable development; secondly, marketing of Bangladesh tourism products and services abroad through effective promotion and marketing. A governing body, headed by the Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, consisting of 17 members govern the functions and responsibilities of the Board. The Governing Body is responsible for making policy, and creating guidelines and strategies for implementation of the policy and the decisions of the government. The Chief Executive of the Board is the member-secretary of the Governing Body who is also the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for the operation and administration of the Board as well as for the implementation of the decisions of the Governing Body.
Since journey from 2010, BTB is working on formulating policies for tourism development, providing advice or guidance to those concerned in the implementation of plans, coordinating with related public and private organizations, identifying, conserving, developing and promoting tourism product and services, developing and creating public awareness of tourist attractions, facilitating tourist both domestic and foreign for the comfortable and safety visit and stay in tourism destinations, promoting and marketing of tourism products and destinations. Moreover, BTB arranges different tourism events, road show, familiarization tour, photo competition and others to expand the tourism market nationally and internationally. BTB is responsible to develop and promote sustainable tourism, eco-tourism, river cruise tourism, ocean cruise tourism, community based tourism, responsible tourism, agro-based tourism, adventure tourism, backwater tourism, religious tourism, historical tourism etc.
Bangladesh Tourism Board has carried out few award winning campaigns which have been applauded by international community and thus the campaigns are playing very effective role in creating a distinctive positioning of Bangladesh in global travel and tourism arena. Beautiful Bangladesh-School of Life, for example, the first ever country promotional campaign launched during Cricket World Cup 2011 created a huge awareness at home and abroad about Bangladesh. A television commercial made on this theme got several international awards and helped shaping a positive image of the country. BTB attends different international travel and tourism exhibitions and exhibits Bangladeshi tourism products and services very attractively which made BTB pavilions and stands awarded in some exhibitions. As a part of Annual Performance Agreement (APA), Bangladesh Tourism Board has been developing community Based tourism (CBT) as well as ensuring more participation of people through improving managerial scheme and administrative capacities in different parts of the country. In addition, decisive and large scale measures have been taken to facilitate and create basic amenities in tourist attractions of different districts. Bangladesh tourism Board offers familiarization trips, commonly referred to as FAM trips to familiarize Bangladesh as a tourist destination in the world. Realizing the vast potentials and multi- dimensional benefits of tourism, the Honorable Prime Minister of the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh gave a clear direction to prepare a short-term, mid-term and long-term Tourism Master Plan in a meeting of National Tourism Council (NTC). An International Consultancy firm along with 3 (three) join ventures have been awarded to materialize the dream of the preparation of Tourism Master plan.
The worldwide outbreak of COVID-19, spread out from Wuhan city of China in December 2019, has brought the world to a standstill, and tourism has been the worst affected of all major economic sectors. The adverse impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on tourism and travel industry is severe in Bangladesh. BTB has formulated the statement of loss and damages and submitted it to Government for necessary directions. BTB has also formulated a recovery plan with the guidance of UNWO and stakeholders. With some guidelines this recovery plan is under the process of implementation to recover the loss and damage of tourism industry. With a view to re- open the industry BTB has successfully formulated Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). This SOP will increase the confidence of domestic and foreign tourists towards the tourism related service sectors of Bangladesh and will develop tourism in Bangladesh. Moreover, awareness and training program in different district is going on. Tourism destinations for domestic tourist have already been re-opened and smiling face of tourists and entrepreneur of different sub-sectors of tourism along with the manpower of this industry reflects the message of hope. Now BTB is waiting to welcome foreign tourist to expedite the whole of the economy. BTB believes that Bangladesh will overcome the situation of tourism crisis soon.
